Bawling Baby, Barf, and a Bat

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

Last night was rather exciting…in a bad, I’m so tired I feel sick, sort of way. To start, Winifred was extremely fussy. She’s growing quickly and wants to eat whenever she’s awake. We’ve given her bottles of breast milk on several occasions just so she’ll eat more and sleep longer. Last night we found that 2 ounces is no longer enough for a feeding. After the bottle she continued making hungry signs so I breastfed her and she ate as if she’d had no bottle at all. She’s a pig!

Nothing seemed to sooth her however. She’d fall asleep only to wake up minutes later screaming. Around 8:30 I finally got her to sleep while burping her after yet another feeding. I was still holding her and starting to doze myself when Guinness said “Whoa”. I thought he’d just seen something interesting on television but when I opened my eyes to see what, there was a bat circling our bedroom. We’re not really sure how it got in the house but Guinness said it just swooped right in our bedroom door.

Guinness’ reaction was much calmer than mine. He did however immediately throw a blanket over me and Freddie. I peaked out a few times to find the crazy animal passing directly over our bed just a few feet above our heads. Guinness opened our back door but the beast refused to leave. After a few minutes under the blanket, Guinness suggested I make a run for it with the baby. I did so and closed the door behind us leaving him in the room with the bat.

He tried a few things to get the bat to leave but the darn thing had landed in a corner of our ceiling and wasn’t leaving. Guinness eventually resorted to a broom and a bag and Winifred and I were able to return to our room. But Freddie was awake again and crying.

Also, my slight stomach ache turned into something worse. After saving us from the bat, Guinness took care of little Winnie for about an hour while I groaned in pain. Around 10:00 I ran to the bathroom to loose my dinner. Guinness gave Winnie a bottle I’d pumped earlier and I slept a bit. She still wouldn’t shut up though. Just before 11:00, Guinness made up a bottle of formula since the baby refused to sleep and I was feeling too ill to breastfeed. Just as soon as he had it mixed she passed out asleep. She slept for hours and after that we had a good night.

She’s behaving rather well so far today. She’s making more eye contact lately and turns her head intentionally to look at people. Last week she broke out with quite a bit of baby acne. It seems to be drying up now but her poor little face is still red and bumpy. Hopefully it won’t last too much longer.

Guinness has helped my parents set up a flickr account.

Cordless (15 days old today)

Tuesday, March 6th, 2007

Winifred’s umbilical cord fell off this morning. It was gross.

Not much more to tell really. She and I are recovering quite well. She’s screaming/crying more lately. She’s still a very good baby.

Winifred has a doctor’s appointment tomorrow so we’ll soon know how much she’s grown in these past two weeks.

It’s funny. I barely remember what it was like to be pregnant. I feel like she’s been here much longer than two weeks.

She’s so amazing!
