Days One, Two and Three — Road Trip

Day one: Sacramento to Needles, California

Guinness and I stayed up late last night packing and woke up this morning at 5:00 a.m. I’m very sleepy. We got an upgrade on the van for $5 extra per day so we have the stow-and-go seating. Unfortunately we weren’t able to arrange the bags so that Freddie and I could sit in the way back. I’m going to try to rearrange things in the morning. We’re staying at a Best Western. Not fancy, but nice enough. Freddie seems very happy to be out of the car. She was pretty good today but this was the shortest driving day. I hope she’s good tomorrow. Freddie and I both seem to have caught colds. She’s a bit feverish and her nose is runny. It could just be her two new teeth coming in. Her gums are swollen. I’m going to bed now.

Day two: Needles, California to El Paso, Texas

Freddie wasn’t quite as good today but still not bad. She hasn’t done the bad acting screaming yet, just the whimpering “mama why won’t you take me out of my chair”. I was able to pack the bags differently so that Freddie and I can sit in the way back. I now have lots of leg room. Today I watched How to Steal a Million on my MacBook and tried to remember how to crochet. My Grandma Endermann taught me one stitch when I was about 7. I don’t even now how it’s turning out since I did quite a bit of it at night and then left it in the car when we FINALLY got to the hotel. It’s supposed to be a hat for Freddie.

We’re staying at a Best Western again. The free internet won’t work for us since it’s the plug-in kind and we didn’t bring a cord. The front desk loaned out their last one earlier so no luck there either. Guinness says tomorrow is the longest day of driving distance wise. We’re going to Columbus, Texas. Another 10 hours in the car tomorrow.

My cold is still pretty bad. Freddie luckily seems a bit better. I’m congested, my throat hurts, my eyes burn, and I may be loosing my voice.

I’m going to take a shower, bathe Freddie and get in bed now. My head feels like we’re still moving.

Goodnight.

Day three: El Paso to Columbus, Texas

Last night I didn’t get to go to bed right away. Freddie decided to be awake. Not bad, just awake. Guinness really needed to get some sleep for driving so, despite my cold, I took Freddie to the lobby. I figured she’d get sleepy soon enough and I could head back to the room. She didn’t and at 11:00 they kicked us out of the lobby. I went back up to the room but Freddie was still far too noisy for anyone to sleep. My only choice was to grab the car keys and sit in the now not-so-loved van for an hour. We’d taken most of the luggage out so there was plenty of room for her to crawl around. She seemed to think it was great to be in the car, but not in her seat. After a chilly hour or so she crawled over to me climbed in my lap and put her head down. I, very gratefully, took the hint and headed up to the room.

The long night didn’t quite end there. Freddie woke up once more around 4:00 and my sore throat got so bad I lost my voice for a while. I had trouble swallowing water for several hours.

Today was quite nice despite last night’s adventures. Freddie was very very good. I tried to keep her awake a lot. My computer says it’s 6:11 but it’s actually 8:11 here. I’m hoping she’ll get to sleep right away. My plan is similar to last nights. Maybe tonight it will work. We’re staying at a Holiday Inn Express. It’s very nice and I think the lobby will allow me to stay there all night if it comes to that…I don’t think it will.

We’re getting up at 5:00 a.m. tomorrow to beat the Houston morning traffic. Freddie is wide awake and crawling around the room getting in to everything. Luckily there’s nothing here that can hurt her so we’re letting her keep busy as long as possible. My cold is still hanging on but I am feeling a bit better. I’ve been taking the Airborne, Zicam, orange juice, and anything else I can think of that might help. Hopefully I’ll be well before we get in to Disney World.

I’m off to the shower. Wish me luck and a good night’s sleep…I need it.

Thanksgiving and Disney World

Sunday, November 25th, 2007

We had a great Thanksgiving with lots of friends and family. Around 23 people in all and most came back the following evening to visit and help us eat some left over food.

I wish I had time to give more details but we leave for Disney World tomorrow morning and I’m still finishing up the packing.

I will take time to tell you Freddie has 2 new teeth. One upper left tooth is completely through the gums now and the right upper tooth is just poking through.

She also started talking! She’s become fairly chatty over the last few days. Some of the words still hold no meaning for her but I know she knows what a few of them mean. It’s still mostly mimicking at this point.

Freddie’s words so far include:

Mama (says this constantly…her first word)
Mommy (only occasionally)
Dada (says this constantly)
Daddy (becoming more constant)
Grabbing (Guinness told her to stop grabbing something)
Box (she said this three times in a row…she was, of course, in a box)
Grandpa (twice now apparently…I wasn’t there for one of them)
Hi (with a wave…many times)
bye bye (with a wave…many many times)

She’s mimicked several other words too but not so definite that they need listing here.

She’s also becoming much more confident in walking. She stands on her own for several seconds still but tends to fall to a crawl (on purpose) as soon as she sees something she wants to get.

Guinness and I are bringing my new MacBook on the trip (I LOVE this thing!) so hopefully we’ll both find time to update our blogs and flickr.

I’m going to try to send Christmas Cards this year so please send me your new (or even old) addresses. My email is Angie.Wieland@gmail.com. If you don’t get a card it’s either because we’re having far too much fun in Disney World and I just didn’t send any, or I don’t have your address.

Oh…and Suzanne, my dear cousin in San Diego, found out the gender of her baby due on Valentines Day. I’ll let her break the news to any of you who don’t already know (I think everyone knows by now). Her baby is due the same day Freddie was due! 2nd cousins exactly one year apart…so fun!

Freddie’s First Halloween

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

She was Minnie Mouse.  So cute…don’t you think?

Freddie had a big day.  We went to visit lots of family and stopped in at a carnival. Freddie went on her first hay ride and her first pony ride.  She wasn’t too sure about the pony at first.

She also got her first pumpkin.

There are more pictures on our flickr.
