April 2007

Check out some photos we took on our vacation. We took trains and buses around the whole country and saw many a sight! Click on our photo link if you’re interested. If you’d just prefer to read Heather’s description, I sure she will post something soon, so check back!

We’re finally starting our trip around Korea. If you e-mail us and we’re slow getting back to you, that’s why!

We’ll post some photos when we return next weekend!

Have a great week!

Heather

Every morning we wake up to a day’s worth of news. Tuesday’s batch was terrible. Wednesday’s–in our students’ eyes–was much, much worse: The shooter was Korean.

I wrote an opinion piece for The Bee about it. It’s in today’s paper: http://www.sacbee.com/110/story/157253.html

The kids are recovering now. They move on pretty quickly, and the brighter ones seem to believe me that everything will be okay. Interesting times here.

Take care, all. We’ll post again soon!

Heather

About a week after our last post, Spring arrived, right on time. I went from wearing my big ski jacket on a Wednesday to stowing it permanently under the bed on Saturday. It happened that fast. Four distinct seasons, indeed.

I never realized I was such a slave to the weather. It was a cold, dreary winter–at least to me (the Canadians feel like they’re in the tropics). But in the past few weeks, the cherry blossoms have bloomed and the sun has emerged from behind Mount Munsu. I’m wearing t-shirts by day, sweatshirts by night, and a tank top when I run, much to the Korean’s horror (I’ll get a tan and look “common”–the shame!)

Our boss moved our vacation to the last week of April, so in 10 days we’ll finally get to see this country we’ve been living in for seven months. It’s a great time for hiking–after the cold but before the rain–and we’re going to do a lot of it! Train travel and lodging are cheap here, and you don’t need reservations for either. We’re going to pack the Lonely Planet guide and our athletic shoes, and see where we end up!

I need to head out on the long trek to Starbucks, but I’ll be posting again in the next day or so. My aunt Diane’s friend Audrey is visiting Korea right now with her school–she’s a high-school teacher–and luckily, she was close enough to Ulsan that we got to meet! It was a gorgeous day at Haeundae, so we walked along the beach, had bokkumbap (spicy chicken and rice that waiters whip up at your table) and soaked in the sauna–her first time! She wrote a “guest post” for this blog about the temple stay she did last weekend–I’ll put it up soon, so check back!

Cheers, as the Canadians say,

Heather
